Global Impact, Local Roots: Inside the World of ETS

You may have driven past our entrance, run a 5K through our campus and likely recognized the name ETS on your way. But are you aware of all that goes on across our 376-acre campus? As your neighbor, and a company made up of people that strive to help others find success, the work we do isn’t just global, it’s personal.

You’ll hear it in hallway conversations and team meetings. You’ll feel it in the passion our employees bring to our mission. Many of us have firsthand experience with ETS products: we’ve prepped for grad school with a GRE score, pursued our dream careers with the Praxis exam, or studied abroad thanks to a strong TOEFL score. Some were fellows or scholarship recipients in our early years. ETS has helped shape our personal journeys, and today, we help shape the journeys of millions more.

From our headquarters in Princeton, New Jersey, to offices across six continents, ETS is a global force in education. Yet, our local roots remain firmly planted. We’re part of this community—and the global community—with equal intention.

A Legacy with Purpose

Founded in 1947, ETS was built on a bold idea to expand access to opportunities for people everywhere. That legacy still guides us today. Each year, we deliver assessments and educational solutions to nearly 50 million learners in more than 200 countries and territories. But we’re not just testing knowledge, we’re unlocking doors to education, careers, and life-changing opportunities.

Our mission—advancing the science of measurement to power human progress—isn’t just words on paper. It informs every decision we make and every solution we create. We work at the intersection of research, innovation, and opportunity to ensure our tools do more than assess, they enable.

The Science Behind the Score

Creating assessments that are fair, accurate, and meaningful is no small task. It begins with our research and test development teams, where psychometricians, educators, linguists, and technologists collaborate to design each question with intention and precision. Our content is built using rigorous scientific methods and tested repeatedly to ensure it meets the highest standards for quality and validity.

In an era shaped by rapid advances in AI, ETS is blending technology with human insight. While artificial intelligence now plays a key role in developing and scoring some assessments, it’s never the whole story. Every question still goes through multiple rounds of expert review because our reputation for quality, and more importantly, the futures of our test-takers, depend on it.

For high-stakes assessments like TOEFL or Praxis, we use a carefully calibrated mix of AI and trained human scorers. For lower-stakes testing, AI helps us deliver faster, scalable insights. But in every case, the goal is the same: deliver scores that are timely, accurate, and meaningful.

Global Reach, 24/7 Delivery

Once upon a time, assessments meant shrink-wrapped booklets and paper scantrons. Today, global delivery looks much different. ETS assessments are delivered 24 hours a day, seven days a week, thanks to secure digital platforms and robust remote proctoring technologies. We meet test-takers where they are, in over 200 countries, ensuring flexibility and accessibility at scale.

Our ability to deliver and score tests efficiently means learners get results quickly, sometimes instantly, so they can take the next step on their journey without delay. And what a journey it is.

More Than a Test

An ETS score isn’t just a number. It’s a passport to opportunity. For students, our assessments open doors to top universities. For professionals, they serve as stepping stones to new careers and credentials. Governments and institutions rely on our data to make informed decisions about policy, funding, hiring, and more. Whether it’s used in a visa application, scholarship review, or professional licensure process, our work is powering human progress, one measure at a time. But assessments are only part of the story.

Innovation at Our Core

ETS is home to the ETS Research Institute, one of the most prolific educational research hubs in the world. Our researchers publish hundreds of papers each year, influencing not just our own products but the broader field of educational measurement. We’re not just participants in this space—we’re shaping it.

Through new product initiatives like our Skills for the Future partnership with the Carnegie Foundation, we’re reimagining what success looks like in the classroom. Together, we’re helping schools measure and develop durable skills—like collaboration, critical thinking, and resilience—alongside traditional subjects. Because we believe education must evolve to prepare our youth not just for the next grade, but for life.

Giving Back—Locally and Globally

Even as our reach spans the globe, our commitment to local communities remains unwavering. Here in Princeton and neighboring Lawrence Township, ETS has been a quiet yet consistent force for good. Through employee giving programs, we help fund scholarships for students across the country. Our volunteer initiatives empower team members to roll up their sleeves and give back, whether it’s mentoring students, participating in food drives, or supporting local nonprofits. Our global philanthropy efforts reflect this same spirit. Wherever we operate, we aim to be more than a workplace—we strive to be a good neighbor.

Quiet Hero, Bold Mission

ETS has never been one to chase the spotlight. But behind the scenes, we’re helping shape the future of education, employment, and opportunity. And we’re just getting started.

We’ve set an ambitious Human Progress Commitment: to ready 100 million+ people for the next generation of jobs by 2035. That’s not just a number—it’s a promise. A promise to help learners thrive in a world that’s constantly evolving. A promise to build tools that assess not just what people know, but what they can do. A promise to center people, access, and innovation in everything we create.

The Road Ahead

As the education landscape continues to shift, ETS is evolving right alongside it. We’re embracing change, investing in innovation, and expanding our reach. Through it all, our mission leads us forward: advancing the science of measurement to power human progress. Because at ETS, we don’t just measure progress—we power it.

And it all starts here—in Princeton, in our communities, in the lived experiences of our employees who once sat where today’s test-takers sit. We know the stakes. We’ve lived the journey. That’s what makes our work matter.
