Getting into the Holiday Spirit, No Matter What You Celebrate

Princeton Perspectives, Issue #57, November 14, 2024

Editor’s Note

Have you gone shopping recently (with holiday music on repeat throughout the store), and later found yourself humming a holiday tune in your kitchen? Have you thought about what you will wear to your annual holiday work gathering? Whether you observe any of the upcoming holidays or not, our society has made them a part of life. And, you tend to get involved somehow, whether it’s in adopting the positive spirit of the season, contributing to food or clothes drives, or by delving in to prepare the meal and gathering with family or friends to celebrate.

With Thanksgiving soon approaching, and December’s religious holidays following suit, it seemed the right time for Princeton Perspectives to focus our issue on Getting into the Holiday Spirit, No Matter What You Celebrate.

Perspectives Revisited

We wrote about the opportunities that exists amongst Princeton’s local parks and open space in the article Jump, Play, Run, Eat – Local Parks Provide Opportunities for Everyone in the Community (in the issue Every Day is a Special Day – How to Celebrate Them Around Princeton, July 2023) and soon, even more open space will become a part of the municipality. Tomorrow, November 15th, at a 2:30pm ribbon-cutting ceremony, the 153-acre tract of land once known as The Lanwin Province Line Woods property will officially open to the public as the newest open space preserve in Princeton. Through an agreement underway since 2021 and with funding from public and private sources, the largest remaining undeveloped tract of land will be named 153-Acre Wood. It sits in the northwest corner of Princeton and will now offer more established trails to the community.

As we noted in the September 2024 Perspectives Revisited, an $85-90 million referendum was in the works for Princeton Public Schools. It has now officially been confirmed the January 28, 2025 referendum will break that number down into three questions defined as “must have,” “need to have” and “will soon need” groupings. Though Interim Superintendent Dr. Kathie Foster urges all projects are needed, the referendum vote will pose Question #1 ($37.9million) to authorize expansion of Community Park School and replacement of HVAC systems at PHS; Question #2 ($38.3million) to expand Princeton Middle School and repurpose space at PHS; and Question #3 ($12.9million) to expand Littlebrook Elementary School. The questions are tiered in a way that Question #1 must pass in order for Question #2 to pass, and both Questions #1 and #2 must pass in order for Questions #3 to pass.
